Rain on a beach trip feels like a loss, but there are plenty of rainy day things to do on Edisto Island if you know where to look. The island’s museum, a reptile center, the state park’s learning center, a well-stocked bookstore and a few farm markets fill a wet morning nicely, and Charleston is close enough for a full day indoors.
Many Lowcountry rains, especially in summer, are afternoon thunderstorms that pass in an hour or two. So before you write off the day, check the radar on our Edisto weather page; you may get a dry window for the beach after all.

Indoor Things to Do on Edisto Island
Edisto Island Museum
The best rainy-day stop on the island. The Edisto Island Historic Preservation Society’s museum covers the island from its first people through Sea Island cotton, the Civil War and the Gullah Geechee community, including part of a slave cabin from Point of Pines. It’s at 8123 Chisolm Plantation Road, about 7.7 miles from Edisto Beach, and open Tuesday–Saturday 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Adult admission is $8, and children 10 and under are free (2026). See our Edisto Island Museum page.
Edisto Island Serpentarium
Part of the Serpentarium is indoors, so a light rain doesn’t rule it out, though the outdoor gardens are a big part of the visit. It is seasonal: in 2026 it runs Thursday–Saturday in spring and fall, Tuesday–Saturday from late May to late August, and indoors only from December 3 to 19 before closing for the winter. Adult admission was $21.95 from April to October 2026. Check our Serpentarium page for dates.
State Park Learning Center
The Environmental Learning Center at Edisto Beach State Park has exhibits on the ACE Basin and live animals, including an alligator, and it is open Tuesday–Saturday 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Ranger programs run several days a week and need pre-registration at 843-869-4430. Park admission applies ($8 adults, $4 ages 6–15). More on the state park guide.
Edisto Island Bookstore
A good place to wait out a storm. The Edisto Island Bookstore at 547 Highway 174 sells new and used books, with regional fiction and history and a children’s room. It is open Monday–Saturday 10:30 a.m.–6 p.m. and closed Sunday; call (843) 869-1885.
Farm Markets and Shopping
- Marsh Hen Mill (formerly Geechie Boy Market & Mill), 2995 Hwy 174, a mill and market. State agriculture listings show Thursday–Monday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; call 843-603-0074 to confirm.
- King’s Farm Market, 2559 Hwy 174, a farm market open February through December. See our King’s Farm Market listing.
- Seafood: pick up fresh local shrimp to cook at the rental; a pot of Frogmore stew is made for a rainy evening.
A Long Lunch
Rain is a good excuse for a slow seafood lunch. Browse our Edisto Island restaurant guide for current hours and listings.

Rainy Day Outdoor Options
Not every wet day is a washout. Light, steady rain with no thunder can be fine for some outings.
- Scenic drive: SC-174 is a National Scenic Byway, and the oak-covered road to Botany Bay is moody in the rain. See Tunnel of Trees. Dirt roads get rutted after heavy rain, so drive slowly.
- Church grounds: the historic churches along SC-174 can be seen from your car; see historic churches.
- After the storm: the hours after a big blow are prime time for shark teeth and shells along the shell line.
Avoid kayaking, paddleboarding, boating and the beach whenever there is thunder or lightning in the area.
Rainy Day Trip to Charleston
Downtown Charleston is about 48 miles, roughly an hour and a quarter, from Edisto Beach. Museums, shops and restaurants make it the classic rainy-day escape. Plantation sites on the Ashley River, such as Drayton Hall (closed Tuesdays) and Magnolia Plantation & Gardens, are a similar drive but mostly outdoors. Our day trips from Edisto Island guide has drive times and hours.
Rainy Day Ideas at the Rental
- Board games, puzzles and a stack of books from the bookstore
- A Lowcountry cooking night with local shrimp and grits
- Plan tomorrow’s outings with the tide charts
- Read up on island history in our Edisto history archive
Storm and Lightning Safety
- When thunder roars, go indoors. A beach is one of the most exposed places in a storm. Get into a building or a hard-top car, and wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before going back out.
- Get out of the water at the first rumble, including pools, creeks and the ocean.
- Rough surf after storms and strong wind raises the rip current risk, and there are no lifeguards on Edisto Beach. Check our swimming safety guide and the National Weather Service rip current forecast.
- Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks from August to October. Follow Charleston and Colleton County emergency instructions and sign up for local alerts when you arrive.
- Flooded roads: coastal roads can hold water during heavy rain, especially at high tide. Don’t drive through standing water.
