When the summer crowds leave, Edisto Island settles into its slowest stretch of the year. Days are mild, the beach is nearly empty at low tide, and there’s time to learn the creeks, the back roads and the faces at the farm market. A monthly rental is the easiest way to live at that pace. Here’s what the weather does, what stays open, and how to set up a longer booking.

Off-Season Weather, Month by Month
There’s no official weather station on Edisto, so NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals for coastal Charleston are the closest guide. Average highs and lows, with average water temperature:
- November: 67°F / 53°F, water about 64°F
- December: 61°F / 47°F, water about 57°F
- January: 58°F / 44°F, water about 53°F
- February: 60°F / 46°F, water about 54°F
- March: 66°F / 52°F, water about 60°F
- April: 72°F / 60°F, water about 68°F
Pack layers. A breezy day on the beach or the marsh feels colder than the number, while a calm afternoon in the sun can feel like spring. Check our Edisto weather page before you plan outings.
What an Edisto Winter Feels Like
Winter is when the beach belongs to walkers. Fossil hunters like low tide after a storm for shark teeth; our shark teeth and shelling guide has tips. Birders have the marsh and maritime forest to themselves; see bird watching. If you bring a dog, Town rules from November 1 through April 30 ask that pets be under control rather than leashed on the beach.
A few winter realities: Botany Bay is closed on Tuesdays and on scheduled hunt days, so check before you drive out. Edisto Beach State Park is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. outside Daylight Saving Time, and the lion’s mane is a winter jellyfish, so watch where you step on beach walks.
What’s Open in the Off-Season
- Food Lion at 104 Jungle Road keeps its 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. hours every day.
- Marsh Hen Mill on SC-174 is listed as open Thursday through Monday year-round.
- King’s Farm Market is open February through December.
- The Bay Creek Park Market runs Wednesdays from April through October, so it’s a spring treat rather than a winter one.
- The state park’s interpretive center is open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with ranger programs that need pre-registration.
- Outfitters and some restaurants trim hours or take a winter break. Call ahead.
For gray days, our rainy day ideas and the Edisto events calendar have indoor options and seasonal happenings for the weeks you’re here.
Setting Up a Monthly Booking
Many listings are built around weekly calendars, so it pays to ask directly about monthly terms. Among local managers, Carolina One advertises monthly winter rentals and longer-term leases. On Vrbo, message owners even when a listing shows only nightly prices.
- Utilities: are power, water and internet included, or capped?
- Cleaning: is there a mid-stay clean, and what’s the departure fee?
- Internet: what’s the speed, and who fixes it? Island repairs can be slow, so a hotspot is a smart backup.
- Heat: what kind of heating does the house have, and how does it handle a cold snap?
- Linens: are sheets and towels provided for a long stay?
- Mail and trash: where do packages go, and what’s the trash day? In recent winters, Town pickup has dropped to Mondays only from late fall through March.
Taxes and permits differ for longer stays. In the Town of Edisto Beach, stays of 30 days or less carry 12% in combined sales and accommodations taxes, so ask how your quote treats a longer booking. Charleston County’s short-term rental rules cover stays of 29 days or less, so a monthly stay on the island side falls outside that definition.
Hurricane Season and the Shoulder Months
Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30 and peaks from August through October. A winter booking that starts in November overlaps the tail end, so read the cancellation and evacuation policy closely. At least one local manager sells optional trip interruption insurance that covers mandatory evacuations, but it must be bought before the final payment.
If your stay runs into spring, remember that sea turtle season starts May 1. Beach-facing lights go off at dusk, and the town beach leash rule for dogs returns the same day. Shrimping with a cast net, without bait, reopens on May 1 too.
Monthly and Winter Rentals FAQ
Is Edisto Too Quiet in Winter?
That depends on what you want. Expect empty beaches, shorter hours at some businesses and a small-town social calendar. People who come for walking, fishing, birding and reading tend to love it.
How Cold Does It Get?
January is the coolest month, with average highs near 58°F and lows near 44°F in nearby Charleston.
Do Monthly Rentals Include Utilities?
Some do and some cap them. Ask before you book and get the answer in your rental agreement.
