Pet-Friendly Rentals on Edisto Island

Raised Edisto Island rental home with a large green lawn

Edisto is an easy island to share with a dog: flat, quiet roads, long beach walks in the cool months and plenty of marsh-side smells. The catch is that the rules change depending on where you are on the island and what month it is. This page lays out where dogs can and can’t go, what to look for in a pet-friendly rental, and how to keep your pet comfortable in Lowcountry heat.

Where Your Dog Can Go on Edisto

The Town Beach

On the beach in the Town of Edisto Beach, dogs must be leashed from May 1 through October 31. From November 1 through April 30, the Town requires pets to be under control rather than on a leash. One Town page asks owners to keep dogs leashed through November, so a leash is the safe choice that month too. Pick up after your dog every time, on the sand and in town.

Edisto Beach State Park

Dogs are welcome in most outdoor areas of the park on a leash of 6 feet or less, or otherwise physically restrained. Cabins and the cabin area are off-limits to pets. In the campgrounds, leashed pets are fine but can’t be left unattended. See our state park guide and camping guide.

Botany Bay Plantation

No dogs on the Botany Bay beach or causeway, at any time of year. If a Botany Bay walk is on your list, leave the dog at the rental. Our Botany Bay guide covers hours and the rest of the rules.

Around Sea Turtle Nests

From May through October, marked loggerhead nests dot the beach. Keep dogs well away from the stakes and tape, and off the dunes entirely. The sea turtle protection rules page explains why.

Picking a Pet-Friendly House

Start with the pet filter, then read the house rules closely; “pets considered” isn’t the same as “pets welcome.” Ask about the pet fee, limits on size and number, whether dogs may be left alone in the house, and whether they’re allowed on furniture. Get the answers in writing before you book.

  • A fenced yard, or at least a secure area under the house, saves a leash walk every time your dog needs out.
  • Shade and a hose or outdoor shower for rinsing off sand and salt before anyone heads upstairs.
  • Fewer stairs. Most island homes are raised, which is hard on older dogs. An elevator helps; see elevator rentals.
  • Hard floors that handle sand and wet paws.
  • A quiet road or beach access nearby for early-morning and late-evening walks.

If a big yard matters more than walking to the beach, look beyond the oceanfront rows. A creek or island-side home can offer more ground, though you’ll drive to the sand; see marsh and creek-front rentals.

Heat, Ticks and Gators

Summer highs on this part of the coast average in the upper 80s, and dry sand and pavement get much hotter than the air. Walk early and late, carry water, and keep beach outings short at midday. Dogs with thick coats or flat faces struggle most in July and August.

Ticks and fleas are around in the warm months, especially in tall grass and wooded edges. Bring your usual preventive and check your dog after walks. On the beach, washed-up jellyfish can still sting, so keep noses away from anything clear and gelatinous on the sand.

Alligators live in Lowcountry ponds, lagoons and creeks, and a dog at the water’s edge can attract one. Keep your dog leashed near fresh and brackish water and don’t let it swim in lagoons. Feeding alligators is illegal in South Carolina.

What to Pack for a Dog on Edisto

  • Leash of 6 feet or less (the state park limit), plus a backup.
  • Waste bags, and more than you think you need.
  • Vaccination records and your pet’s ID tags.
  • Old towels for sand, and a sheet to cover the rental’s furniture.
  • A crate if your dog will be left in the house.
  • The number of the nearest emergency vet, saved before you arrive.

Pet-Friendly Edisto Rentals FAQ

Can Dogs Go off Leash on Edisto Beach in Winter?

From November 1 through April 30, the Town asks that pets be under control rather than leashed. Because one Town page extends the leash request through November, keep the leash on that month, and always keep dogs away from people who don’t want company.

Are Dogs Allowed at Botany Bay?

Not on the Botany Bay beach or causeway, at any time.

Are Dogs Welcome at the State Park Cabins?

No. The park doesn’t allow pets in cabins or cabin areas. Leashed dogs are allowed at campsites, so camping is an option if you want a park stay with your pet.
