Reunions, milestone birthdays and three generations under one roof are some of the best reasons to rent on Edisto, and the house you pick shapes the whole week. Big homes here usually sit high on pilings, which raises questions about stairs, parking and who sleeps where. This guide walks through those, plus the logistics of feeding and moving a crowd on an island with one main road.

Stairs, Pilings and Elevators
Most coastal homes on Edisto are raised on pilings, with parking and storage underneath and living space a full story or more above the ground. That means a climb before you reach the kitchen, and often more stairs inside to the top-floor bedrooms. For grandparents, anyone recovering from surgery, or a family hauling coolers and a stroller, an elevator changes the week.
Not every elevator is equal. Before you book, ask:
- Which floors does it stop at, including the ground-level parking area?
- How big is the cab, and will a wheelchair or walker fit through the door?
- Is there a bedroom with a full bath on a floor the elevator serves?
- Who do you call if it stops working, and how quickly is it repaired?
Even with an elevator, the trip to the sand can involve steps over a dune walkover. The Town directs visitors with mobility needs to the Lybrand, Mitchell, Baynard and Edings accesses, and beach mats are at Accesses 1, 9, 20 and 28. Our public beach access page has the full picture.
Sorting Out Bedrooms and Baths
Bedroom counts in listings can mislead. Look past the headline number to how the beds and baths are actually arranged.
- Count beds, not rooms. Bunk rooms are great for kids and rough for adults.
- Pair baths with bedrooms. A shared hall bath for three bedrooms makes for long mornings.
- Plan a main-level suite for anyone who shouldn’t do stairs at night.
- Find a quiet corner for babies’ naps and early sleepers, away from the game room.
- Match the headcount. Managers cap occupancy at the number on the rental agreement, so list everyone, including the friends joining midweek.
House rules vary by company. Edisto Realty, for one, requires renters to be family groups, married groups or responsible adults over 25, with proof of age. Read your manager’s policy before you sign.
Parking for a Crowd
A big group often arrives in several cars, and parking is set property by property. Wyndham Ocean Ridge and Bay Creek Villas allow two vehicles per rental, and Ocean Ridge doesn’t allow parking on the street or in the yard. On the island side in unincorporated Charleston County, one common short-term rental permit type requires on-site parking of one space per permitted bedroom. In town, cars can’t be left overnight at beach accesses, in Town parks or along the street, so extra vehicles need a spot at the house.
Ask exactly how many cars fit on the driveway and under the house, and whether a boat trailer can come too.

Feeding and Moving a Big Group
Groceries
Food Lion at 104 Jungle Road is the island’s full-size grocery store, open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. With a large group, assign a shopping crew, bring staples from home, and shop before check-in so dinner isn’t a scramble. For local produce, Marsh Hen Mill on SC-174 and King’s Farm Market are worth a stop on the drive in. Our restaurants guide is the place to start for fresh seafood and group dinners out.
Linens and Supplies
Many island houses don’t supply sheets, bath towels or paper products, though some managers provide pillows and comforters. For a home with eight or ten beds, that adds up, so decide early whether to pack linens or rent them locally.
Getting Around
Some island bike rental companies deliver to your door, which beats loading a dozen bikes onto cars. Golf carts follow Town rules: daylight only, secondary roads only (crossing Palmetto Boulevard straight across is allowed), a licensed driver 16 or older, and belts or child seats for passengers under 12. Our bike paths guide maps the easy routes.
Keeping Everyone Busy
Big groups do best with a loose plan. Send the anglers out with our fishing guide, book an eco tour for the curious, line up kids’ activities, and save one day for Botany Bay. If anyone needs to work, note that rental Wi-Fi repairs can be slow on the island, so a hotspot is good insurance.
Large Group Rentals FAQ
Does an Elevator Home Mean Step-Free Access?
Not always. Some elevators skip a floor, and the beach walkover may have steps. Ask which levels the elevator serves and which beach access is easiest from the house.
How Many Cars Can We Bring?
It depends on the property. Gated complexes such as Wyndham Ocean Ridge and Bay Creek Villas allow two. For houses, ask the owner how many vehicles fit on site.
