The Plantation Course at Edisto
The Plantation Course opened in 1974 under the name Oristo. Sources disagree on the original designer; Tom Jackson and Willard Byrd are both credited. The course was fully renovated in 2006, and a new pro shop opened in May 2007. It’s owned by the owner of The Links at Stono Ferry, and the course website lists Stono Ferry and Tot Hill Farm in North Carolina as sister courses.

The Layout
At just over 6,100 yards from the back tees, the Plantation Course is short by modern standards, but it isn’t a pushover. Fairways are framed by live oaks, magnolias and palms, and lagoons come into play on many holes. Long hitters who spray the ball will struggle; steady players who keep it in the fairway will score.

Wildlife on the Course
Expect to share the course with egrets, herons, ospreys and pelicans, and with alligators sunning on lagoon banks. Give gators plenty of room, don’t retrieve balls near the water’s edge if one is nearby, and never feed them; feeding alligators is illegal in South Carolina.
When to Play Golf on Edisto
You can play year-round on Edisto. Average temperatures for nearby coastal Charleston give a good idea of what to expect:
- Spring (March–May): Highs from the mid-60s to near 80. The most pleasant season for many golfers.
- Summer (June–August): Highs in the mid- to upper 80s with humidity, afternoon thunderstorms and bugs. Book an early tee time.
- Fall (September–November): Highs from the low 80s down to the upper 60s. Comfortable, and quieter once summer visitors leave.
- Winter (December–February): Highs around 58–61 on average. Cool and sometimes breezy, but plenty of playable days.

Golf Etiquette and Tips
- Call ahead about dress code, cart rules and walking policy, which vary from course to course.
- Bring insect repellent from spring through fall, especially for early and late rounds.
- Stay hydrated in summer and plan your round for morning.
