Who’s Behind It

The Edisto Island Open Land Trust (EIOLT) was organized in 1994 to keep the island rural. It reports protecting about 4,546 acres, and says that together with its partners nearly 52 percent of the island’s high ground and marsh is conserved. It also led the push that earned SC-174 its National Scenic Byway designation and owns the Hutchinson House, a Gullah heritage site on Point of Pines Road. If you’ve enjoyed the drive onto Edisto under the oaks and past open fields, this is one of the groups working to keep it that way.

An Up-Island Event

Unlike most Edisto events, which cluster around Bay Creek Park in the beach town, the oyster roast happens up-island, on the same highway as King’s Farm Market and Marsh Hen Mill. For anyone staying at the beach, that means a drive back up the highway rather than a bike ride. For those coming from Charleston for the day, it’s on your way in.

A Sunday afternoon in early November usually means cooler weather, which is what oyster roast season is all about in the Lowcountry. Sunset comes early that time of year, so the afternoon schedule suits it.

History of the Date

The roast falls on a Sunday in early to mid-November. The 2025 roast was on November 9. The land trust hasn’t posted anything about 2027 yet.

Plan Your Visit

  • Buy tickets ahead. Sales are online in advance; don’t count on buying at the gate.
  • Plan the drive. From the beach town it’s a trip back up SC-174, so decide who’s driving before you head out.
  • Dress for the outdoors. Bring layers for a breezy afternoon and shoes you don’t mind getting muddy at a farm venue.
  • Make a weekend of it. Spend Saturday at the state park or Botany Bay, and on Sunday morning visit Legacy Live Oak Memorial Park, the land trust’s 12.4-acre property on Sand Creek just off Highway 174, which has a trail, marsh views and good bird watching.

The same weekend has other island events: the Kiddie Pole Classic fishing tournament is Saturday, November 7. See the full lineup on our Edisto Island events page.

Is it worth planning a trip around? If you love oysters or care about the island’s open land, it’s one of the best fall Sundays on Edisto.
